Our Theory of Music

Make no bones about it, you have many choices as a consumer in the music lesson aisle.  But how do you make an informed decision when the boxes on the shelves all pretty much look the same?  The information below will shed some insight into the origins of our organization and how we came to develop a learning approach that has become so successful in our beloved home town of Atlanta.

"We started Flying Fingers (in 2007) after hearing the woes from so many parents who were watching their children struggle with their lessons elsewhere.  There are so many hum-drum and 'here today, gone tomorrow' type teachers saturating the local market... I just thought to myself, there has to be a better way to get kids excited about music while assuring parents that they're actually getting something for their money." - Nick Kavali (Owner)

You're probably here right now because you just want one thing.  You want your child to have a positive learning experience with a musical instrument.  Right?  It really isn't much to ask.  The tricky part (which is where we put our capes on) is how to get your child to want to learn simply for their own enjoyment.  There are too many examples of young aspiring musicians who completely lost their musical interest due to unrealistic expectations and crummy instructors.   While this has been a godsend for youth soccer leagues, it’s a shame for the overall development of the child.

"The important thing is to look at the practice from all sides.  The student, the parents, and the teachers alike, all deserve to have complete confidence that their voice will be heard and their best interests will be at heart.  So we set about with these things in mind to develop a service that wouldn't just cover all the bases, but that would cover them with pizazz!" - Bonnie Kavali (Better half of the owner)

It's pretty simple really.  Music lessons have to be fun.  Every lesson.  Every time.  We get it.  Practice sessions have to produce results to be rewarding.  Every session.  Every time.  We get that too.  And week-after-week new challenges need to be introduced to keep things interesting.  Yup, you guessed it, we’re in the business of making self-motivated musicians and proud moms and dads.

So...

If you're a PARENT who is reading this, you can have confidence that your teacher has been background checked, has earned or is currently earning a college degree in music, has teaching experience, and has been fully trained in the Flying Fingers method to offer your family a premium experience.  Your child will have an entertaining and educational experience, learning all about the fundamentals of their instrument and music theory through a clever balance of traditional and contemporary tools we make available to our staff.  Lastly, we believe you deserve to have a dependable and friendly personality working with your family who will be invested in the outcome of your child's lessons.  So we strive to be accessible and to communicate with you (the parent) routinely, to keep you informed of your child's weekly assignments and progress.

If you're a STUDENT who is reading this, you can expect to meet a fun teacher who is going to listen to you.  Regardless of which instrument you choose to study, you will be receiving a well-balanced diet of veggies (the musical variety), a main course, and even some dessert each week.  That just means that you'll be getting a well-rounded exposure to learning about music.  And don't worry, we'll smother the veggies with cheese and ranch dressing, ok?  Your teacher will work thoughtfully with you to keep you organized, set goals for you and and challenge you at your own pace.  If you keep a positive attitude and give it your best...well, just take a look at our "Shooting Stars" page to see what other students in our program have been up to.

And if you're a TEACHER who is reading this, please visit our "Wanna Join Our Band?" page where you can learn a lot more about the types of things we have to offer career-minded professionals like yourself.  Being part of a group that values your service can offer you many rewarding things you won't find out there on your own.

"Making Music Education a Fun Experience".  It's more than just a novel slogan to us; it is the core philosophy that is instilled into all of our teachers here at Flying Fingers.  We love what we do and hope you will give us an opportunity to bring the excitement of music into your child's life.
